Dr Neil Wilson was the recipient of the 2015-16 Physics Department Teaching Award as voted for by students. He was presented with the award by David Leadley, Head of Department on 11th October 2016. His name has been added to the list of prize-winners on the new board on the Physics Concourse.

The latest 2015 National Student Survey (NSS) shows that 95% of undergraduates who completed courses in the Physics Department are satisfied overall with their course. This is the fourth highest satisfaction rating among Russell Group physics and astronomy departments.

Congratulations to our new cohort of undergraduates on your excellent examination results and gaining a place on the Warwick Physics or Math/Phys course. Congratulations to Giorgos Petrou, Jeffrey Ede, Arif Ali and Rajesh Patel, a team of second year physicists who were runners up in the final of the nPower 'Energy Challenge' which was held at Warwick University last week. Over forty teams from universities throughout the UK initially entered the competition and entrants were asked to submit their business proposal to address the challenge of 'How RWE nPower could revolutionise the energy industry'.

The physics students innovative idea was to encourage nPower customers to buy into the provision of renewable energy by investing in 'myTurbine', an initiative where turbines would be crowd funded which would potentially appeal to both investors attracted by the annual dividend they would receive and customers who wanted nPower to commit to a low carbon emission energy supply. The panel of judges were clearly impressed with this imaginative proposal that was well researched and excellently presented. Giorgos, Jeffrey, Arif and Rajesh have all be offered an internship with nPower as a result of their success in the energy challenge.

Gavin Bell, together with Cellist Nick Roberts from Warwick’s Coull Quartet and departmental colleagues Edwards, Harrison, Pounds and Roemer, has been awarded an IATL fellowship to “develop interdisciplinary teaching material around the links between science, mathematics and music“. The aim is to engage with students and academics across different faculties and to plan interdisciplinary undergraduate teaching in the area of science/maths/music. The fellowship builds on last year’s joint premiere of Edward Cowie’s Quintet for 21st Century Oboe and Quartet “The Colours of Dark Light”, a work directly inspired by physics. Congratulations to all involved in the fellowship!

Caroline Shenton Taylor who was a physics undergraduate has won the UK final of the Fame Lab competition and now will be involved in the international final at the Times Cheltenham science festival. Caroline was one of our undergraduates and did her PhD on Compton scattering under Jon Duffy.

A couple of 3rd year students were good ambassadors for the physics department as they won the recent nPower Energy Challenge competition...

It is with great sadness that the University and its Department of Physics reports the death of undergraduate student Yin Fei (Andrew) Chan, a 1^st year MPhys student who died on Thursday 9 January 2014.

Simon Pocock and Mohammad Che Rozenan were amongst the 2012-2013 recipients of the Giving to Warwick Prizes, for the Excellent 2nd Year Academic Performance category. Giving to Warwick Prizes are available thanks to the generous donations from Warwick's alumni and friends.
