"Histoire(s)": 2001 Group Annual Postgraduate Conference

5 March 2010, Department of French Studies, University of Warwick

Proposals for papers are invited for a one-day conference on the theme of histoire(s) from research students in any area of French Studies including those with an interdisciplinary focus from other departments such as comparative literature, music, history or art.  The differing definitions ascribed to the notion of ‘histoire(s)’ in discourse significantly direct our own specific frames of reference; as such, this conference will follow a rather fluid thematic pathway stemming from the inherent ambiguousness of the French term. Exploring the many possible interpretations and their interconnectivity, and questioning the possibility of distinguishing fact from fiction, ‘history’ from ‘story’, we will explore aspects such as the filtering and rewriting of histoire(s) as well as the means of transmission, allowing for the representation of a variety of voices and a consideration of multiple perspectives.  It is hoped that papers will also challenge the idées reçues surrounding the linearity of histoire(s) and the issue of legitimisation.

Universal Reformation: Intellectual Networks in Central and Western Europe 1560-1670

21-23 September 2010, St Anne's College, University of Oxford

Please note the revised conference dates; this event will now take place on 21-23 September.

For decades before the Thirty Years War, Protestant communities Europe, lacking fully functional local universities responsive to their needs, sent their sons westward to study in Germany’s numerous universities and academies. The resulting contact and reciprocal influence knit the intellectual histories of these regions together in inextricable ways. The three decades of war which followed disrupted many of these institutions and replaced these patterns of academic travel with fresh waves of intellectual refugees fleeing in all directions. At the same time, the trauma of displacement transformed long-nurtured aspirations toward ecclesiastical reunification, political pacification, pedagogical improvement, and philosophical reform into an all-embracing programme of universal reformation. This international conference invites both emerging and established scholars to contribute their perspectives on this huge system and the unfamiliar intellectual traditions exchanged within it.

The Body on Display, from Renaissance to Enlightenment

6-7 July 2010, Durham University. An interdisciplinary symposium for early career researchers.

At once an organ system, disciplinary target, metaphor, creation of God, cultural construction, 'self' and receptacle for the soul, it is not surprising that the body has fallen under the attention of historians of art, gender, thought, medicine, theatre and costume, and of literary scholars, archaeologists and historical sociologists and philosophers. This symposium will look at the  human and human-like body on, and as, display, between c.1400 and c.1800.

Papers of 20 minutes are invited from postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers working on any part of the period. Studies looking at non-European countries are especially encouraged, as is flexibility in approaching the body as a visual, performative, aesthetic and representational entity. Please send abstracts (of no more than 300 words) to body.ondisplay@durham.ac.uk by 30 January 2010.
