Staff: Working from home securely

Working from home looks likely to continue for many of us over the coming weeks and we are all having to adjust. Understandably, it can be challenging in lots of ways. You may have family around while you juggle work and childcare. You may find it difficult being away from your usual team, colleagues and sources of help or support.

Unfortunately, while we all spend more time online to work and stay in touch, cyber criminals are busy finding ways to exploit the situation. So we need to ask for your help. Please be extra vigilant online. Take on board the advice provided to help you work securely – take a look are our animation Top Tips below:

Following them will help to keep you safe. Sharing them will help keep all our staff, students and data secure against the cyber threats we know are increasing while we work away from campus.

At a glance:

  • Never reply to emails asking for your passwords, PINs or other account details. Ever.
  • Don't open attachments unless you completely trust where they have come from.
  • Create strong passwords and use different passwords for different services.
  • Stop and check links and websites before clicking, even if they look ‘real’.
  • If in doubt, always check with the helpdesk or your service provider (e.g. your bank) before responding.

Remember the IT Helpdesk is available if you have any questions or concerns and we will continue to share guidance and advice through posts like this.

As well as advice at Warwick, there are other sources of help and information – like the Information Commissioner’s Office guidance on working from home securely and the National Cyber Security Centre's advice for individuals and families to stay secure online .
