Dr Raquel Nunes on the impact of climate change on ageing

Dr Raquel Nunes, Assistant Professor in Environmental Change and Public Health, University of Warwick, said: “The impact of extreme temperatures can lead to increased morbidity and mortality due to difficulties in body temperature regulation. Additionally, extreme weather events disrupt mobility, social interactions, and access to essential services, significantly affecting their overall health and well-being. These findings align with my own research in Portugal, emphasising the universal challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather on the health of older populations. The need for actionable interventions, climate-resilient infrastructure, and holistic approaches to address the impact on quality of life resonates across different regions, underlining the global urgency for proactive measures in the face of a changing climate.”
