Professor Abhinay Muthoo from the department of Economics at the University of Warwick, the Dean of Warwick in London and Co-Director of the Warwick Policy Lab comments on Brexit. As Brexit backstop talks resume, can May secure the changes she wants with time running out?

"The current Brexit impasse looks terrible, and several options are being discussed as to how to break this impasse.

"At this point in time, I am still more of the view that there is a good chance that the Prime Minister’s (amended) deal will just about pass when it is put to Parliament, by March 12^th.

"This is informed in part by the so-called deadline effect in the art and science of negotiations. In any negotiation with a deadline, if an agreement is reached, it is reached at the eleventh hour - as it is only around then that minds are focused and compromises are made."
