A survey of 12,000 employees conducted by the Government Equalities Office in 2020 revealed that 30% of employees in the UK say that they experienced sexual harassment at the workplace (SH). Yet currently, SH is not a criminal offence in the UK. We propose to conduct an online survey experiment on a large representative sample, designed to understand the role of perceptions of SH and information constraints in explaining weak policy action. In particular, we will investigate variation in perceptions of SH, and the extent to which people have biased beliefs over the prevalence of SH and over the economic and non-economic harms from SH. We will experimentally shock their beliefs and measure outcomes including the willingness to donate to support SH victims and petition for criminalization of workplace SH. We take steps to check whether our findings might be driven by experimenter demand.
