Adaptive materials show a large response to a small stimulus and are used in technologies as sensors, actuators, memories, energy harvesters and many others. The behaviour of these materials depends crucially on the interplay of their structural, electronic and magnetic properties. Modelling and advanced characterisation allows us to optimise their performance and enhance their capabilities. A wide range of materials are currently studied for their functionality, including recently discovered classes of material with enormous potential for future applications.
