The Reasonable Adjustments in Laboratory Settings (RAiLS) online conference on the 13th of May 2026, brought together UK STEM laboratory practitioners and people with experience in Reasonable Adjustments in non-traditional learning spaces to share best practice, and discuss the progress needed in the sector.
The event saw lightning talks highlighting best practice from a diverse group of people and break-out rooms for discussion on the sector progress and needs.
We counted with 63 participants from 20 Institutions and representing 36 departments across the UK!

Dr Katherine Deane's keynote talk
The keynote by Dr Katherine Deane (University of East Anglia)Link opens in a new window, “Lab access: Do it, Prove it, Value it”, emphasised the social model of disability, highlighting that barriers are often embedded in environments rather than individuals. The keynote drew attention to persistent inequities in STEM, including underrepresentation of disabled academics and widespread shortcomings in laboratory accessibility, while advocating for practical, systemic change and accountability.
