Applying for Student Finance
When you apply or re-apply for student loans and grants it will be through your regional Student Finance body such as Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Wales (SFW), Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI) or the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).
Both part-time and full-time undergraduate and PGCE students can apply online at www.gov.uk/studentfinance. EU students can apply for a tuition fee loan only and will need to complete a paper form which is available for download at www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms.
Assessment
Once you have submitted an application you will be assessed by SFE, SFW, SFNI or SAAS and upon completion you will be advised how much support you are eligible for.
Once the signed declaration has been returned to SFE, SFW, SFNI or SAAS and processed your student finance application is complete. It is only at this point that your details are made available to the University and we can view your tuition fee loan information.
Confirmation of Attendance and Registration
When we can view your tuition fee loan information we are able to confirm attendance and registration to release payments on the dates specified by your awarding body. This is done by submitting an electronic file on a daily basis. We are unable to confirm attendance or registration until your application is complete - it is your responsibility to ensure it is accurate.
Payment
Once the steps above have been completed, tuition fees are paid directly to the University and applied to your student account. Any maintenance is paid into your nominated bank account - if there are any queries you need to contact your awarding body (please see Useful Contacts). Common reasons for not receiving payment are when you have not supplied your National Insurance number on your application, and when you are not fully enrolled at the University.
Making Changes to your application or information
If at any time your circumstances change which affects the amount your are eligible to receive it is your responsibility to update the awarding body by :
- Logging onto your SFE/SFW/SFNI account and updating your personal details
- Directly contacting SFE/SFW/SFNI to advise of changes to your circumstances or adjusting your Maintenance Loan amount
If you wish to make a change to the amount of tuition fee loan you are borrowing or change your course details before you start your course you should tell SFE,SFW,SFNI about this directly.
However, if you want to make changes to the amount you borrow after your course starts, you need to ask us at the University to tell SFE,SFW,SFNI. Likewise, if you change course, repeat a year or suspend studies after the course has started, we will inform the relevant body of the change in your circumstance.
If you would like more information on how your student finance may be affected by a suspension or withdrawal from study please see the Undergraduate Withdrawal Policy.
