Chemical Categorisation

This tool assists the process of ordering chemicals by identifying the correct hazard category to be used on OPeRA. It requires input of all the Hazard or H-statements, and EUH sentences that are shown on the safety data sheet (SDS)Link opens in a new window for the chemical.

Remember that a chemical may exhibit multiple hazards and that the use of the chemical must be added to your risk assessment for the work which you are undertaking. The risk assessment must also contain the control measures to be used to ensure safe handling, use, storage and transportation of the chemical and consider those who may be at risk of exposure as well as any other risks that may arise, e.g., fire or explosion.

H-statement and EUH sentence input:

Insert all H-statements and EUH sentences from the SDS in the box below, one per line. Ensure there are no gaps in H-statements (e.g. H225), but you must include a gap between EUH and the number in EUH sentences (i.e. EUH 014 not EUH014). Tick the check box if the SDS states that the material is not classified as hazardous:

This material is not classified as hazardous according to regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

University hazard category:

This section identifies the OPeRA hazard category (Low / Medium / High) into which the substance falls.

This information should be loaded into OPeRA when ordering chemicals. The category is derived from the H-statements provided and takes no account of an increase in the severity of a hazard which may accompany an increase in quantity of a given substance.

The H-statements and/or EUH sentences should also be added to the " Comments" box on OPeRA to confirm that you have checked and understood the hazards associated with this chemical.
