Bleed kits
What is a bleed kit?
Health and Safety Services and the Community Safety Team are in the process of installing several ‘Bleed kits’ on University of Warwick main campus and the Innovation Campus, Stratford-upon-Avon.
These kits are easy to use to stop or control blood loss and prevent a person from bleeding out. Whether an injury is sustained from an accident or an attack (it could be an injury with machinery, road traffic accident, potential stabbing, or knife injuries for example) if there is severe blood loss, it is vital that it is brought under control as quickly as possible to prevent an individual from bleeding out. Bleeding control kits are specialised trauma kits designed to provide bystanders with the products they need to stop life-threatening bleeding until paramedics arrive, potentially saving lives.
When it comes to blood loss, time is paramount. A person can die from blood loss in as little as three to five minutes. Having an emergency bleed control kit on the scene can help provide immediate care to the injured individual.
Bleed Kit contents:
Large Trauma Dressing – Designed to control moderate bleeding
Celox Gauze – A haemostatic gauze dressing that is very effective, designed to control moderate to very severe haemorrhage
Fox Seal Chest Seal – An innovative dressing for emergency management of penetrating chest wounds
Tactical Mechanical Tourniquet – Easy to use tourniquet for stopping the flow of blood to the arms or legs
2 pairs of disposable Gloves – Personal protection
Scissors – Emergency sheers for quickly and effectively removing clothes
Emergency Foil Blanket – keeps patient warm and protected from the elements
CPR Face Mask – If CPR is required the face shield protects the user
Marker Pen – Used to note the time a tourniquet is applied – this is important when a hospital come to remove it later
Bleed Kit training:
Health and Safety Services are currently organising certificated training for people working in key areas where 'bleed kits' are recommended.
During November and December 2024 92 colleagues on main campus attended the bleed management training.
During January 2025 38 colleagues on University of Warwick Innovation Campus, Stratford -upon-Avon (Wells campus) attended bleed management training.
If you are interested in attending any future sessions please contact healthsafetytraining@warwick.ac.uk
