Use of Adrenaline Auto-injectors (EpiPens)
What are EpiPens?
EpiPens are used for the treatment of Anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening reaction to a trigger such as an allergy
Anaphylaxis symptoms:
Anaphylaxis usually develops suddenly and gets worse very quickly.
The symptoms include:
- feeling lightheaded or faint
- breathing difficulties– such as fast, shallow breathing
- wheezing
- a fast heartbeat
- clammy skin
- confusion and anxiety
- collapsing or losing consciousness
There may also be other allergy symptoms including an itchy, raised rash (hives); feeling or being sick; swelling (angioedema) or stomach pain.
The casualty may carry an 'EpiPen'. This can be used to save their life if its given promptly. The casualty should be able to inject this on their own, but if necessary, assist them to use it. Jab the EpiPen firmly into the outer thigh at a right angle.
The dose of adrenaline can be repeated at 5-15 minute intervals if there is no improvement or the symptoms return.
If you are made aware of any allergic trigger causing the reaction remove it.
If you do need to carry an 'EpiPen' for emergency treatment please ensure you make your local first aiders aware so that they can support you if needed. You may also wish to inform a colleague who would be prepared to administer the EpiPen in the event you are unable to do so.
Someone experiencing anaphylaxis should be placed in the correct position:
- most people should lie flat with their legs raised
- if they're pregnant they should lie on their left side
- people having trouble breathing should sit up for a short time to help make breathing easier, and then lie down again when possible
- avoid a sudden change to an upright posture such as standing or sitting up – this can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure
See NHS guidance regarding 'Anaphylaxis' for further information.
View the contents on the EpiPen webpage for finding out more information regarding how to use an EpiPen. Instructions are also included on the side of each 'EpiPen' injector regarding how to use it or someone else needs to give you the injection.
