To understand why a web forward might be necessary, you need to understand a little about how a web domain works.

A web domain can only point directly to a server – either by name (e.g. www.warwick.ac.uk) or by IP address (e.g. 137.205.195.44). A domain cannot point directly to any sub-pages within warwick.ac.uk.

This means that if you create a new domain and point it at SiteBuilder, every request for your domain will go to the SiteBuilder home page. We need something to point to your specific sub-pages, not just to the Warwick server.

This is where a web forward will redirect your external domain to your specific pages on the Warwick web site.
