For students who complete the APP PGR there is the opportunity to take their work further by extending their e-portfolio evidence to gain a 30 credit award. The Postgraduate Award in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education takes the evidence a student has collated through the APP PGR course and builds on this, enabling the participant to demonstrate a deeper engagement with core elements in teaching and learning in Higher Education.
The PGA TLHE is not a formally taught programme; students work on their additional evidence independently. However, there are online materials, tutorials and writing retreats available to support students to successfully complete this award. The PGA is a 12 month programme, designed to follow on from the APP PGR. Registration on this programme is flexible and is not limited to the academic year calendar (e.g. enrolment is not limited to the start of the Autumn Term).
Introduction to PGA (1.5 hour session)
This session provides those who have passed the APP PGR with an introduction to the nature of the PGA, how it relates to their previous programme and what kinds of evidence they will need to bring to the assessed pieces. It is an opportunity to consider what themes might best suit individual students and indeed, whether or not the PGA is right for them at this present time.
Writing retreats (3-4 hours)
Postrgaduate teachers who wish to work towards the PGA have a range of other commitments, e.g. research, which means that finding time to read the pedagogic literature and begin pulling evidence together for the PGA can be a challenge. Writing retreats are designed to give students dedicated space and time simply to 'write' (or read!) - to enable the furthering of this work, alongside peers. Students usually bring a laptop and notes/evidence from teaching and although there is the opportunity to discuss the work with the course leader, the emphasis is on writing and drafting.
Written assessed evidence (3000 words across 3 distinct narratives)
The assessed evidence for the PGA is achieved through a series of practice-based reflections and evidence in the style of the Narrative of Professional Practice (PGA). This means the writing must be both scholarly in nature, but also integrate examples and experiences from the student's own teaching practice. The evidence is presented across three pedagogical themes: all participants will complete the Teaching Observation option plus 2 additional options from the following*:
Each piece requires a 1000 word commentary of critical evaluation. Further guidance on the completion of these tasks is available on the course Moodle. In addition to these tasks, participants will be encouraged to maintain their record of reflective practice through e-portfolio journals, which was established on the APP PGR.
It is essential that participants underpin their discussions in current literature, illustrating what has been read around the issues and developed in terms of an understanding of educational theory relevant to practice. Any citations will be in addition to the overall word count.

Submission and marking
Students should complete the evidence for the PGA TLHE as additional pages in their APP PGR e-portfolio and can submit their enhanced portfolio of work at the start of any academic term within their official registration period. Assessment and feedback conforms to the University 20 day turn around and is subject to exam board approval.
