Workshop sessions


Core Workshops

The programme involves 4 core workshops (6 hours in length) which introduce the key themes of the course (see descriptions below). These workshops are supported with online resources available in Moodle. Students will attend the workshops in chronological order and attend as part of a cohort of students from a range of subject disciplines.

Workshops are all-day sessions but participants are provided with lunch, and morning and afternoon refreshments.

Workshop 1: Course introduction and Reflective Practice with Teaching Philosophy

Indicative content:

Introduction to the course, assessment and e-portfolio· What is teaching and learning in Higher Education? Theoretical perspectives on teaching and learning· Becoming a reflective practitioner and reflective writing· Establishing a teaching philosophy statement. Linking research and teaching.

Workshop 2: Enhancing skills in small and large group teaching

Exploring and evaluating small and large group teaching methodology· Developing skills; exploring innovative approaches and active learning· Planning for learning – session plans and learning outcomes· Teaching with technology

Workshop 3: Assessment and feedback; research-based teaching

What is assessment in Higher Education?· Assessing student performance - establishing good practice· Feedback practice with students. Gathering and using feedback from students· Ideas and expectations in research-based teaching

Workshop 4: Inclusive teaching, learning, resources and approaches*

Indicative content:

Inclusivity in Higher Education – models, philosophies and realities· Supporting students with additional learning needs· Accessible educational design – courses and resources· Challenging and changing practice to support diversity

Workshop 4

CPD workshops

In addition to the Core Workshops, participants are required to attend 3 CPD workshops, from a varied menu so that participants can tailor their programme of study to their needs and interests. Participants may also choose to substitute TWO of the CPD workshops with a relevant activity or event, such as a presentation or conference. Workshops dates and content will be announced at the start of each term.
