Manager FAQs

As a manager, what will my responsibilities be?

As the apprentice's line manager you will be responsible for supporting them throughout the programme. This activity encompasses:

  • Carrying out development reviews with the apprentice and their Coach-Mentor Supervisor (CMS).
  • Providing regular feedback to the apprentice in order for them to improve and implement their skills effectively in the workplace.
  • Releasing the Apprentice to attend regular skills workshops/webinars.
  • Supporting the development of the EPA (End Point Assessment) portfolio.
  • Supporting the apprentice with the completion of their assignments through practical experiences.
  • Allocating time as part of the 20% 'off the job' requirement (see below) to complete learning activities.
  • Participating in quarterly reviews with the apprentice and CMS.

What is meant by ‘20% off the job’?

All activities which allow the apprentice to develop relevant competences, qualifies as an 'off the job' activity. Some of this can occur during routine work activities. Examples of off the job learning include:

  • Attending live, facilitated webinars.
  • Working 1-1 with the CMS.
  • Providing formal coaching for colleagues.
  • Taking part in Action Learning Sets.
  • Written work and assignments.
  • Completing e-learning and other online activities.
  • Completing reflection notes and self-assessments.
  • Taking part in the PDR.
  • Reading relevant books/articles.
  • Watching relevant TED talks.
  • Informal coaching conversations.
  • End Point Assessment preparation.

What will it cost me from my budget

There are no monetary costs involved as this is covered through the apprenticeship levy fund that the University has already contributed to.

What is the Apprenticeship Levy?

The apprenticeship levy was introduced in April 2017. The levy due by the University is paid to HMRC through the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) process, alongside payment of Income Tax and National Insurance contributions. This is held in a 'digital fund' that the University can use to pay for apprenticeship training.

Who should I contact of I have concerns

Each apprentice will be allocated a CMS by the apprenticeship provider, with whom you can discuss concerns. You can also contact Anna Chapman, L&D Business Partner.

As a manager, what do I get out of it?

Skills shortages and staff retention are still among the biggest risks to UK businesses. Apprenticeships can help businesses across all industries by offering a cost effective route to invest in workforce development. If you have trained staff with the right skills for the job, they can do a wider range of tasks and take on new responsibilities - this can help to reduce skills shortages, minimise staff turnover, improve the student experience and increase productivity.

As a manager you will have the opportunity to develop a member of staff with increased competence and motivation, leading to greater effectiveness and increased contribution.

Do I have the final sign off for who does an apprenticeship in my team?

Yes, the application form is completed by both you and your team member.
