University of Warwick Concerto Competition 2022

Would you like to perform a solo work with the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra? This is your chance!

When is it?

Tuesday 8th February 2022.

What do I need to prepare for the audition?

We ask that you prepare a whole concerto (or equivalent - any solo work with orchestral accompaniment is permitted) to performance standard. Imagine you’re going to be playing your concerto with the orchestra on the day of the audition - that’s the level of preparation we’re looking for. We will provide a professional accompanist to work with you.

Will I be able to rehearse with the accompanist beforehand?

Yes. These are scheduled for Sunday 6th February.

What can I expect the audition to be like?

We will ask you to play for approximately 15 to 20 minutes in your audition. We may ask you to play sections of different movements. Don’t worry if your piece lasts longer than 20 minutes. You will be playing to a panel of experts representing different instrument families. The auditions will take place in the Butterworth Hall - where the winner will perform their concerto!

What is the panel looking for?

We are looking for a passionate, polished, engaging performance, which engages us an audience and makes us want to hear more! Your performance should be technically secure with a clear musical interpretation, and should be presented as if you were on stage in front of an audience.

What does the winner get?

The winner will have the opportunity to play their concerto with the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra in a concert at a mutually agreed time. It will be an amazing experience!

Who can enter?

Any University of Warwick student, on any instrument or voice.

How do I apply?

Please complete this form or go to the Music Centre office, where we’ll also be happy to answer any questions. The deadline for applications is Friday 28th January 2022.
