Preparing for Leadership Programme

The workshop is for Research Active Staff who are not yet fully independent. It is an experiential workshop with coaching and action learning to look at self, intellectual & team leadership. Delegates assess their current position and identify where they would like to be, what it takes to be in that role and create a plan to get there.

This workshop is based on a successful Vitae workshop (Vitae is funded by the UK Research Councils) which has been adapted for Warwick staff.
There is no cost to Warwick Research Active Staff to attend this workshop.

The programme will consist of two workshop sessions:

Session 1

  • What is Leadership
  • Getting to understand leadership
  • Values & Authenticity
  • Facets of superior performance
  • Action Conversations
  • Leadership Book

Session 2

Quotes from previous 'Preparing for Leadership' delegates

Feedback from the November 2016 Cohort

"I really enjoyed this course and it was an very effective use of my time. The course covered all the key elements for a good understanding of leadership both from a theoretical and from a more practical perspective. Thanks to the combination of different activities my attention was caught for all the hours of the training. I also had the opportunity of interacting with colleagues from other departments and of comparing my experience with theirs. I recommend this course to young colleagues that are receiving training as line managers".
Dr Donato Masi, Assistant Professor, WMG

“The course was very useful with a focus on life/career reflection highlighting critical incidents, significant decisions and people who have provided leadership along the way. I was able to reflect on my career so far and the role of leadership in providing direction at significant turning points. The training approach was very engaging and I enjoyed the various group work sessions and learning from the ideas and experiences of colleagues from other departments. The course made me more conscious about leadership as well as reflect on the type of leader I’d like to be. It was also a good opportunity to network with colleagues from other departments”.
Dr Matthew Ozoemena, Research Fellow, WMG

Feedback from the February 2016 cohort

"The programme is really helpful in upgrading managerial skills, not only for researchers but in a wider academic context. The learning method is in fact an activity-led learning; it makes you think carefully about the leadership and managerial roles as part of your career and support reflecting on them to make it more effective in your daily jobs. It is also a good networking opportunity to meet people from other departments as well as externals. I found the programme very useful to achieve my research-activity aims and to build and manage a good relationship with external research institutes".
Hadi Moztarzadeh, Senior Teaching Fellow, WMG

“The preparing for leadership course was a really valuable use of my time. I was able to reflect on my own experience of leadership and management and identify my leadership skills, as well as future goals. The course gave me the opportunity to build my leadership knowledge and skills dynamically with a wide range of other university staff, allowing for unique insights to be discussed in our breakout sessions.”
Dr Rebecca Johnson, Research Fellow, WMS

“The course was very thought provoking and focused on learning through reflection on past and present experiences. Course facilitation was engaging and entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed the various group work sessions and learning from the experiences of other researchers from around the University. The course increased my awareness of leadership around me as well as my own leadership experiences which I feel equipped to build on. I can highly recommend this course to anybody wanting to explore the idea of leadership.”
Karoline Freeman, Research Fellow, WMS

Preparing for Leadership - January 2015 "It was really helpful to attend the "Preparing for Leadership" course so that I could actively consider the type of leader I wanted to be, before finding myself in a leadership role. It was useful to reflect on different leadership styles and the values I find important in order to consider the organisational culture I would want to create within a team. The course also taught me that you can lead (with a little "l") without being in a Leadership (management) position."
Dr Beth Middleton, Research Fellow, WMG
