Budgeting can be challenging and there are often costs you forget to budget for.

Use this page for student budgeting tips and to discover who to speak to when you have financial concerns.

You aren’t the only person needing support so please keep reading to see how we can help!

Speak to Student Funding

Student Funding offer support to students struggling financially and offer advice on budgeting and spending.

Student Funding drop-in sessions are located in Senate House

Shop wisely

  • Always shop with a list and keep a budget in mind.
  • Use student discounts/vouchers.
  • Buy supermarket-own brands where you can.
  • Shop around for the best deals on a product.

Pack a snack

  • Save money by bringing a packed lunch or check out the Warwick Retail - Food and Drink Link opens in a new windowwebpage for discounts on campus.
  • Remember to bring your own reusable cup. Some coffee shops offer a discount if you bring your own.
  • Some food and drink outlets offer a loyalty scheme so you may want to take advantage of these to save money.

Get a part-time job

  • Boost your income and gain some valuable experience to add to your CV.
  • Unitemps and the Student’s Union regularly advertise jobs, check out their websites.
  • Make sure only to take on as much work as you can handle while juggling your studies and maintaining your mental wellbeing.
 

Travel cheaper

  • Plan ahead and buy your tickets in advance. Invest in a termly travel pass and consider a rail/bus card for extra savings.
  • Cycle or walk where you can!
  • If you need a car, consider car sharing.

Don't forget your course costs

  • Remember to budget for stationary, printing, and other costs.
  • Borrow books from the library or buy them second-hand.

Going out

  • If you think you'll want to attend several events at the Student's Union, then it may be cheaper to buy an annual pass than pay as you go!
  • Many museums, art galleries, cinemas and other leisure venues offer a discounted rate for students - make sure to enquire about this when purchasing tickets and remember to take proof that you are a student.

Don't avoid asking for support

  • Don’t leave it too long to speak to someone if you are struggling financially
  • Avoidance can lead you to full further into debt
  • Student Finance have Hardship Funding for a reason, don’t be afraid to ask!

TooGoodToGo!

  • Every day fresh food goes to waste at cafes, restaurants, and shops - just because it hasn’t sold in time. The Too Good To Go app lets you buy and collect ‘Magic Bags’ of this food - at a great price - so it gets eaten instead of wasted.
  • You won’t know exactly what’s in your order until you pick it up - it’s all part of the surprise.

Warwick MOVES+

  • Whether you’re walking, swimming, going for a run, or cycling you can earn points for every move through the University of Warwick Moves+ app.
  • Use your points to access rewards such as hot drinks from campus outlets, Warwick branded items, and Sport and Wellness Hub passes.
  • You can accumulate points quite quickly so this can be a simple way to cover the costs of your weekly coffee!

UNIDAYS

  • UNIDAYS offer discounts on food and drink, fashion, technology, beauty, lifestyle, and health and fitness for university students.
  • This app has a range of offers and is often available to use online and in person.

Vinted

  • Don’t go buying new items when you can use Vinted to buy and sell pre-loved items and lower wastage.
  • This app is a great way to find cheap items for sale or to easily sell items you no longer want.
