I played Water Polo for the University of Warwick’s women’s first team before graduating with a BSc in Economics in 2022.

Swimming has always been a part of my life, so when I first started playing Water Polo at Warwick, the transition from swimming to playing the sport felt very natural. My coach was great at smoothly integrating those new to the sport while also making the training sessions effective to the more seasoned players.

Older members in the club were also very approachable and provided me with lots of tips and encouraged me to develop my skills, this helped to create an environment that made picking up a new sport very accessible.

We started playing friendlies against local clubs which helped our teamwork and understanding of the game, but we mainly played in BUCS Midlands league 1, representing Team Warwick at home and away.

Whilst our team’s camaraderie was unparalleled, being a part of Team Warwick allowed me to build a rapport with the wider university community as the support during matches and Varsity is always encouraging, especially during a tough match.

From tough training sessions in the pool to exhilarating socials outside of the pool, water polo was helped me to meet people across the university that I wouldn’t have necessarily come across, whilst also providing a good breather from my degree.

Now that I’ve graduated, I play for a local club which gives me an avenue to relax after work and provides me with opportunities to meet like-minded people from all walks of life whilst keeping my fitness up.

Being involved with running the club helped develop my organisation and communication skills in a way that a lecture theatre couldn’t provide and learning about leadership boosted my confidence for tackling life beyond Warwick in the workplace.

Joining a sports team was hugely out of my comfort zone, but it was the best decision I could have made and my experience with sport at Warwick form the fondest memories of my time at university.

Swimming and Water Polo was my home away from home, and the friends I made are for life.
