Going home

Going home may seem easy, but there are processes connected to winding up aspects of your life in the UK which you will have to adhere to, and some of these may need a little time to organise.

Furthermore, adjusting back to life in your home country can sometimes cause difficulties: you have changed during your time in the UK, and so has home.

Please don't leave things to the last minute. Start sorting out your departure around a month before you leave.

The UKCOSA guidance notes ‘International students: preparing to return home’pdf file have been written to help international students finishing their studies in the UK. Please read through and use the check-list at the back to make sure all practicalities are sorted. The information on reverse culture shock will also help you prepare for the adjustment ahead.

In addition to this, there are a few points specifically applicable to Warwick students:

• Shipping: there is information on the International Office website about some local shipping companies.

• Banking: make sure you leave enough time to make arrangements with your bank. It takes time to close down direct debits/ standing orders etc. The banks on campus may also be able to offer you other banking facilities (graduate accounts) once you graduate, so do make enquiries and don't leave it to the last minute.

• Police Registration Certificate - If you have a certificate, you are required to return it to the Police if you are leaving the UK for good (you will not need it on your final departure from the UK). In order to simplify the process for you, we have arranged with both West Midlands and Warwickshire Police that you can bring your Police Registration Certificates into the International Office. We will then send them off to the police for you. We suggest you bring them in to our reception during the last week before you leave the UK. NB. Please note that if you intend to return to the UK within the next 12 months (or even think this might be a possibility), you should not hand in your certificate, but hang onto it for your return.
