Student Profile: Devina Singh

Many Universities in the UK only focused on the history and politics of the West, whilst Warwick had a more global and diverse curriculum which was very important to me..

Discover Devina's journey at Warwick and what led them to apply for BA History and Politics.

How did you find out about Warwick?

I heard about Warwick via university fairs held at my previous school.

Did you consider studying anywhere else? What made you choose Warwick?

I chose Warwick over other universities because of the nature of the curriculum offered here. Many Universities in the UK only focused on the history and politics of the West, whilst Warwick had a more global and diverse curriculum which was very important to me. I preferred to go to Warwick over universities in my home country because the quality of education, as well as the opportunities after graduating are much better here.

How did you feel to be awarded a scholarship?

It felt amazing to be awarded a scholarship! I still tell people that being awarded the scholarship one of my greatest achievements.

Who was the first person you told when you received the news about your scholarship and how did they react?

The first person I told when I received the news about the scholarship was my mother. She had gone out for a walk, so I told her through a phone call- she rushed home immediately to give me a hug!

How did you apply and did anyone help you with your application form and visa application?

The application process for University, the scholarship and my visa went pretty smoothly. The most help I received for scholarship and university applications was feedback on my essays. My father helped me fill out the visa application form, to ensure that I did not miss out on anything. I did not face any difficulties- the most stressful part of all the applications was probably waiting to hear back!

What was your first impression of Warwick when you first walked around campus?

I think I was just in awe of how big it was! I definitely remember thinking about how pretty it was as well.

What is the best thing about Warwick?

The scenery. I live in Lakeside village, so there's always something amazing to see- including watching the geese line up to cross the road! I really enjoy the walks and getting to live around so much nature.

What is the worst thing?

The worst thing about Warwick for me is the walk that it takes from my accommodation to central campus. Apart from that, I don't think I have much to complain about.

How is your accommodation?

My accommodation is currently on campus, and I really like it. The kitchen and the rooms are quite modern and nice.

Are you a member of any societies? If so, what have you done with them?

I am a member of AIESEC, and also a part of their design and marketing team. I haven't really had the opportunity to do much yet, but I look forward to it in the future! I am a part of the (very new) Taylor Swift Society! I’m the editor of the newsletter! While we’re just getting started, I can’t wait to see what else we will do!

What are your plans when you graduate?

I would like to enter the field of international relations once I graduate.

What would you say to someone considering applying for an Undergraduate Global Excellence scholarship at Warwick, what would it be?

My only piece of advice to anyone considering applying for the Undergraduate Global Excellence scholarship would be to do it. Applications can be incredibly daunting, and there were several instances where I thought I wouldn't receive the scholarship- I even considered not applying! I am, however, glad that I did. The scholarship is an incredible opportunity, and I you have the chance to apply for it, I say do it.

What one thing makes you happy about Warwick?

The overall environment! The people here are all lovely- the teaching staff is incredibly supportive, and you're bound to find life long friends in some of the people that you'll meet here.

Devina's course:

BA History and Politics examines the political and social dimensions of history and international relations. We examine how historical events, actors and institutional legacies have influenced the world we live in today. And we discover complementary insights that can be gained from combining historical and political research. Together we will explore the theory and the reality of why people and states interact in the ways they do. The two subjects complement each other - one exploring historical events and trends, and the other understanding how those legacies shape politics today.
