Working During your Studies
Your Working Rights
Your Student Visa includes restrictions on working in the UK. It is important that you are aware of these limits so that you can use your working rights to get some work experience, without putting your status at risk.

Employers have a legal obligation to check that you are allowed to work in the UK, so you must be able to provide evidence of this, usually by showing them your current passport and your share codeLink opens in a new window.
As all Student Visa holders have a limited right to work during term-time, you will also need to provide evidence of when your term and non-term times occur.
Therefore, you should provide the following to enable your Employer to conduct a Right to Work Check:
- You Passport Data Page
This is your proof of Identity
- Your Certificate of Status, or, other Official University of Warwick Status Letter that confirms your Term Time
This confirms that you are a University of Warwick Student, confirms your Course Details and confirms your Term Dates.
This enables your employer to confirm your UK Immigration Status and Conditions.

It is a good practice to keep detailed personal records of how many hours you work each day to ensure you are not exceeding the maximum numbers you are allowed to work per week.
It is even more important to keep these records if you work irregular hours or if you have more than one employer. Employers may not know about the work you do elsewhere, but it is your responsibility to ensure the total number of hours you work with one or more employer does not exceed 20 hours a week during term time.
If you are doing a placement as part of your degree and it is an assessed and integral part of the degree, you can work full-time hours.
The work undertaken on your placement will not count towards the 20 hours a week you are allowed to work under your Student Visa work conditions.
Therefore, in addition to your placement you can work an additional 20 hours either with the same or different employer.
If the employer providing your official work placement wants to know the details of your degree programme and see confirmation that it includes an official work placement, you should speak to your academic department and obtain a letter.
A 'week' is defined by the UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) as a period of 7 days starting on Monday at 00:00, and finishing on Sunday at 23:59.
This means that you must ensure that in any week beginning Monday and ending Sunday you do not work more than your permitted hours.
National Insurance Number and Income Tax
The National Insurance Number (NINo) is a unique personal number.
You do not need to pay anything to obtain this number, it is free.
It is a record of your national insurance contributions.
Your employer will deduct National Insurance contributions from your pay once you reach a minimum level of earnings in the UK.
If you earn below this level, then you do not need to pay income tax or National Insurance.
If you only work during university vacations and do not expect to earn more than the annual tax-free allowance, you can complete a form so that your employer will not deduct income tax.
You will find some useful information about this here.Link opens in a new window
You do not need a NINo to start working in the UK.
You can apply for NINo after you have started your job.
However, you will need to prove to the employer that you have the right to work in the UK, this may be your BRP card or digital immigration status.
If you have a BRP card, for some immigration categories, the National Insurance Number will appear in the remarks section on the reverse of the BRP card. Otherwise, you will need to apply for a NINo.
Applying for a National Insurance number is simple, and you can do this online.
Once you have proved your identity as part of the online application process it can take up to 16 working days to receive your NINo.
If you need help with the application, you can contact the National Insurance helplineLink opens in a new window.
