Warwick Nursery - Green Flag Award 2024!

The University's Nursery achieved the Green Flag Award for the third consecutive year! The three topics this year were Biodiversity, Marine and Global Citizenship. These are a some of the activities that the children completed to achieve the award.

Biodiversity- The children made bird feeders, bug hotels and wildflower seed bombs throughout the year, sharing instructions and recipes with parents and families. Part of the nursery garden was left to grow wild to encourage insects and small wildlife. The nursery help plant 60 saplings that were donated by the Woodland Trust. 30 more saplings will be planted later this year.

Marine- The children learnt about plastic pollution, especially how it effects the wildlife in our oceans, lakes and waterways. The children observed the litter in the lake behind the nursery and discussions and activities grow around how pollution effected animals such as the geese and swans that the children see on a daily basis. The children built sea creatures from clean plastic waste that now hangs in the nursery atrium forming an underwater instillation.

Global Citizenship- The nursery encouraged parents and families to share their cultures, interests and skills with staff and children. Parents read stories to the children in their home language (10 languages in all), a father who is a fire fighter brought to nursery his crew and fire engine for a morning, a mother came in to share her experiences of Ramadan and Eid and another mother, who is a dance teacher, taught the preschool children a dance for their graduation event. The nursery still donates regularly to the Canley Food Hub.
