It's Fashion Revolution Week!
One of the manifesto points of Fashion Revolution WeekLink opens in a new window - the one we will focus on - is that “fashion never unnecessarily destroys or discards but mindfully redesigns and recuperates in a circular way. Fashion is repaired, reused, recycled and upcycled. Our wardrobes and landfills do not overflow with clothes that are coveted but not cherished, bought but not kept.”
A problem associated with fast fashion is the environmental impact of both the quality and quantity of clothing producedLink opens in a new window. The nature of fast fashion means that huge quantities of clothing are produced, often using environmentally-damaging materials and processes. Furthermore, each year just in the UK, 300,000 metric tons of textiles are binnedLink opens in a new window, ending up in landfill (20%) or burnt (80%) in incinerators? The amount of material being recycled to make new clothes is less than 1%.
