ribbon

The conference brings together international scholars working on HIV/AIDS infection in its national and global context since the 1980s. We aim at identifying different forms of political engagement and activism and how these changed over time since the first appearance of the disease. In the process we will raise awareness that HIV/AIDS infection continues to be a ‘global problem’ affecting myriad countries and posing myriad challenges.

Participants include:

Dr Michael Bochow (Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung, Public Health Research Group, Berlin): Political Activism and AIDS Activism Among Gay Men in Germany

Dr Helen Coyle (School of History and Classics, University of Edinburgh): Taking Care in Edinburgh: AIDS Education, 1983-1994

Jason Crawford (Phd Candidate, Interdisciplinary Humanities Doctoral Program, Concordia University, Montreal): Go And Sin Some More! The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence: AIDS, Activism, Archive

Steven Gambardella (PhD Candidate, Department for the History of Art at University College London): AIDS and the Ethics of History

Dr William Spurlin (Reader in English and Director of the Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence and Cultural Change, Sussex University): Border Crossings: Queer Theory, Biomedical Practice, and the Globalisation of HIV/AIDS

Prof. Lucia O'Sullivan (Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Adolescents' Sexual Health Behaviour, Department of Psychology, University of New Brunswick): HIV Prevention for Young Adults in South Africa: Addressing Risk in the AIDS Epicentre
