Society for Italian Studies - Biennial Conference (20-22 April 2022)in-person and online eventRuns from Wednesday, April 20 to Friday, April 22. The biennial conference of the SIS at the University of Warwick on 20th-22nd April 2022 looks forward to bringing together again the Italian Studies community in the UK and Ireland, Italy, and beyond to share their emergent and ongoing research. We welcome scholars and practitioners at all stages of their academic and professional careers who are working on the diversity of cultures, languages, histories, and creative practices associated with Italy from the medieval period to the present and future. In planning papers, panels, and broader participation, colleagues are invited to think inclusively about what is encompassed by research and teaching in Italian Studies, which kinds of expertise and experience contribute meaningfully to its advancement, and how knowledge, outcomes, and ideas might most effectively be exchanged in the context of this gathering of diverse specialists after the recent interruption to the rhythm of regular, discipline-wide engagement. |

Talk by Dr Kirsten Harris: Living Free - Utopian WorldsOculus, on campusFrom Thomas More’s Utopia to Marvel’s Black Panther, this fascinating talk from Dr Kirsten Harris explores questions of freedom through utopian imaginings from a range of places and times. "What does freedom look like to different people, cultures or societies? Does freedom mean liberty from oppression, or is it having the freedom to pursue your own desires and interests? Utopian thinkers identify major problems in their own societies and propose solutions to imagine better futures. 'Freedom' features a lot in this kind of social dreaming. Writers, film-makers, activists and theorists all explore ways of living that bring greater liberty and happiness. But freedom is a disputed concept." |
