24th October 2012 - Victorian mysticism and symbolist art

Our reading was on the theme of 'Victorian mysticism and symbolist art', and the session was facilitated by Alice Eden, from the History of Art Department. We read short extracts of works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Arthur H. Mackmurdo, taken from Henri Dorra's Symbolist Art Theories, alongside an extract from W. R. Lethaby's 1891 work Architecture, Mysticism and Myth. We also looked at the furniture and architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and various works of symbolist art.
