Choosing your modules

GSD students chatting

Hello, I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe, given the circumstances. This week, I thought I would talk you through the process of choosing your modules when you get to Warwick University.

As a single honours GSD student, you would be able to choose a lot more modules, within and outside of the GSD department. A double honours student would have to satisfy the compulsory modules of both the GSD and your other department before being able to choose your optional modules.

As a single honours GSD student, my process of choosing modules starts with me listing down all the modules that are interesting to me. I personally find that taking modules that I have a genuine interest in almost always translates into an appreciation for the subject matter and ultimately better grades. From there, I start eliminating the modules according to if there are any pre-requisites I am unable to fulfil, if the department of the particular module allows me to take the module or if the assessment structure suits me. Of course, it is important to note that the modules you choose need to be relevant to GSD and the career path you wish to take and are subject to approval from the department and your personal tutor.

Paying attention to the assessment structure is important because each person would have a preferred method of assessment that they perform better at. You may not always have a choice so it is worthwhile taking it in into consideration when you do. The approval process for modules may differ from department to department so please do ensure that you are aware of the specific process and fulfil all the paperwork required. You can always drop an email or visit the department office for any queries regarding the module selection process.

If this sounds a little intimidating, please remember that your personal tutors are always there to support and guide you through the process as well so do make sure to take full advantage of the opportunity. I hope this gives you an idea of what to expect and how to go about choosing your modules. Take care and stay safe!
