Green Week: 2-8 March 2020

Hello all!

Next week (2-8 March 2020) is Green Week at Warwick, which is an exciting opportunity to increase awareness of and discuss environmental sustainability around the wider campus and with local communities. I thought I’d chat a bit about this event to give you an insight into the kinds of events and opportunities that are frequently taking place on our campus. Hopefully, this will spark your interest in the subject and you can investigate further.

Green Week is an annual event which runs across the University of Warwick and Coventry, supporting and promoting its’ own ‘Green Goals’ and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (which the GSD degree programme is structured around). This year, our campus will be holding events and talks by various industry leaders and academics, including those directly hosted as part of Green Week and those of other societies which are hosting talks in recognition of the week.

Personally, two events which I plan to attend are Enactus Warwick’s ‘Food Waste Summit’ and 'Make your own Lush product' (teaming up with Coventry’s Lush team).

The ‘Food Waste Summit’ will include a full day of presentations by various academics and social enterprise actors, panel discussions and networking - all looking at the environmental impacts and issues associated with food waste. The panel will look at how food relates to wider social issues faced today, including its’ relation to carbon emissions and agriculture’s impact on climate change. As well as being an interesting topic of discussion, I hope this will build on my knowledge from last year that I gained whilst studying a module about the Global Food System. One of the great things about GSD is that it covers really current and relevant topics, which means that you can bring your expertise gained from the course to extra-curricular activities, and everyday discussion and debates.

In addition to Green Week, many other exciting events take place across the year at Warwick, including TedX, Warwick Economics Summit, Warwick Women's Summit and many more!
