Transcript: Effects of COVID-19 on Autumn Term 2020 - Olamide

So I’m sure you’re all wondering how COVID-19 is going to affect us in the next academic year. I don’t have all the answers, let me get that straight out there, but Warwick have released a statement about what they plan to do in the next academic year. Especially if you’re a fresher this is probably most important for you.

Warwick has said that we will be opening campus. On the website it currently says on October 5th is when we plan to open again. It also says that subsequently, there will be a mixture of face-to-face and online teaching, so that is going to vary form department to department. For example, you can have an online lecture, but then you can have an in-person seminar. This is all hypothetical.

It also says that all the facilities on campus will be open, so things like Rootes and hopefully all the entertainment stuff on campus will be open. But, they have said that they will put social distancing in place, so I guess it’s just like when you go to a supermarket now, you have to be two metres apart. I think they might try and do that sort of thing aswell.

I know that it’s really scary, especially if you’re starting a new uni not knowing what’s going on in this climate. But, I think Warwick are really being proactive about it. I know other campuses have completely cancelled all face-to-face teaching, but Warwick is really passionate about the power of face to face teaching, so they’re doing their best at the moment. Hopefully that puts you a bit at ease. So there will be a blend of online and face to face – it won’t just be online. But, don’t quote me, this is all subject to change. This is just currently what’s going on at the moment. For myself and for your sake as well, I hope it stays like that because I know I don’t want to be doing all online learning. As of now, we’re doing a blend in October.

Now, seeing as all this information is subject to change, I thought it’d be best to let you know where you can find the information and updates for yourself. If you go to the MyWarwick website, you can go on the News and Events tabs and then they’ll be a subsequent tab called ‘Information on the next academic year – Autumn 2020’. As you can see, if you go on that page, there’s a whole list of FAQs about the next academic year. If you scroll down, we have statements directly from the University about what they’re going to be doing about the current COVID-19 situation.

As I said before, all of this is subject to change so I’m going to leave some links along with this blog post and that will just be to the Warwick website, and that will probably keep getting updated with new updates about the situation and how COVID-19 is going to affect teaching. If you keep an eye on that and also keep an eye on your emails, we should all be in the loop about what’s going to happen next year.
