Optional Modules for the MAs

Please note that this is not a definitive list of Option Modules and there may be changes to module availability from year to year, due both to curriculum adjustment and staff availability. The modules listed below will be offered in the 2018/19 academic year.

The Option Modules build upon concepts and strategies examined in the Core Modules enabling you to pursue your theoretical and practical interests in more detail.

How should I select my Option Modules?

The Option Modules will be offered in the spring and summer terms and you will need to choose 3 from the list below. This may be in any combination from the columns below but you are restricted to a maximum of 1 module from the Applied Management module column and this must relate to your MA programme. You are free to select 2 others in any combination from the remaining list (subject to space and timetable restrictions). You may be allowed to study a module from another department in the Arts Faculty, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies or take one of the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Modules subject to availability and approval.

When do I need to confirm my choice of Option Modules?

When you join us you will receive plenty of advice and guidance about selecting the Option Modules that are best suited to your personal interests and ambitions. Your Personal Tutor will consult with you about your decision and you will confirm your Option Module choices mid way through the autumn term.

Option Modules (Spring Term)

identifies audience development and digital media strategies for cultural organisations and investigates how to apply them effectively in practice.

examines our understanding of creativity and explores its dynamics in terms of process, people and management.

explores the concept and practice of cultural entrepreneurship and will enable you develop yourself as a cultural entrepreneur and to set up or develop your own business or project.

will develop your understanding and the professional skills required to manage cultural organisations.

introduces marketing concepts and takes a practical approach to marketing in the creative economy.

explores the dynamics between global media policy and market imperatives for producing, promoting, distributing, exhibiting and consuming media.

examines how international, national and local policies are put into practice in the museums and heritage sectors, and what the impacts of these policies are for tourists, visitors, professionals and the general public.

looks at the relationship between producers and consumers and the negotiation of meaning in the production and consumption of media and cultural products.

combines theoretical discussions with field trips to examine how new forms of urban policy, urban space and changing models of urbanisation play out on the ground.

examines the relationship between the self and its mediation in a converged media landscape, through the production of an online mediated self project and an exploration of the very latest thinking on digital representations of the self.

uses historical, theoretical and empirical accounts of the cultural, creative and media industries to explore the realities of work in these settings.

Applied Management Modules (Summer Term)

These modules are designed to give you the opportunity to apply your learning in situ or in practice related contexts. You will be able to develop your professional skills and knowledge whilst undertaking practical tasks and projects.

Please note that you are permitted to select a maximum of 1 out of your total of 3 Option Modules from this list. These modules are designed to build on prior learning therefore priority will be given to students on the relevant MA programme. However, you may still be able to select an alternative module if numbers permit.

working a simulated business context, you will respond to demanding clients, and then will move through the entire production process in designing, developing and marketing a media solution or product.

as a member of a small creative team you will work on a project for a creative or media organisation and develop your experience and understanding of creative teams and leadership

working as a member of a project team you will be challenged to apply your prior learning to a complex set of project related questions in an international development context

you will be able to undertake a placement with a cultural organisation allowing you to gain insights into its operations and develop a practical understanding of the cultural sector

A note about work placements and internships

If you are interested in conducting a work placement/internship, this may still be possible (please check the conditions of your visa) within the scope of your MA and need not be part of an assessed module. You will need to schedule this around other academic and work commitments in addition to your taught modules and dissertation.
