WIHEA Masterclass - Understanding my ‘circle of influence’ and how I can widen it - 27 February 2025
Many thanks to WIHEA Alumni Dr John Kirkman, who delivered a fantastic Masterclass on influence and leadership last week.
We all have a ‘circle of concern’, the things we know about and care about. We also have a ‘circle of influence’, things over which we have influence, and the places we can make a difference. Stephen Covey claims that focussing on the ‘circle of concern’ will only serve to reduce effectiveness, whereas consciously choosing to act will serve to enlarge our ‘circle of influence’. In this Masterclass workshop, the attendees had the opportunity, individually and in small groups, to consider their work and practice, and explore where you were acting unconsciously and how they might be able to become more deliberate in choices and so increase influence and effectiveness. Drawing on literature in the broad area of ‘self-leadership’, attendees took time to think about their habits, reflect on their values, and consider approaches which could help to develop themselves personally and serve to increase their influence. John aimed for this session to shed light on taken-for-granted behaviours, increasing awareness and offering hope of change.
