Managing the CIM listserv lists
Managing the CIM listserv lists
Listserv lists are a type of email list. An email is sent to an address (e.g., research_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies@listserv.csv.warwick.ac.uk) and then the server decides what to do with the email based on the sender.
The server can:
- Discard the email
- Hold the email for approval of the admin
- Send the email to members of the email list
The CIM mail server membership must be manually maintained.
On this page, I take you though how to access and manage the three four listserv email addresses at CIM:
- pgt19-20-centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies@listserv.csv.warwick.ac.uk [login page]
- research_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies@listserv.csv.warwick.ac.uk [login page]
- external_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies@listserv.csv.warwick.ac.uk [login page] [subscription form]
- all_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies@liveserv.csv.warwick.ac.uk [login page]
The research_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies email list is perhaps the most used. You can log into the admin interface by clicking on the corresponding login page link. If you need the mailing list password then please contact James.
Note The membership of the external mailing list (external_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies) should match those in the subscription form page (here). Please contact James if you do not have access to the submissions in the form. Also, people can request to be unsubscribed by emailing cim@warwick.ac.uk.
Clicking on the login page link will take you to the login page.
You will be presented with the admin page once you enter the admin password and click 'let me in'.
Membership management
There are lots of options and the key one is 'Membership Management'. Clicking on membership management shows.
On the membership list page (the one showed above, though emails have been removed for data protection reasons), you can set what the server will do when receiving emails from each email address. The options are:
- mod - emails from this address will be held for approval by the admin
- hide - hide this email address from lists of addresses in the server. Only applicable to email lists which are publicly visible.
- nomail [reason] - no mail is accepted from this address
- ack - sender receives an acknowledgment email after sending an email to the list
- not metoo - senders do not receive a copy their email once the server receives it
- nodupes - mailman will try and make sure that subscribers only receive one copy of a given message
- digest - subscribers will receive periodic collections of all emails sent to the email server
- plain - user receives emails sent to email list as plain text (and not including html formatting)
You should see a pattern in how different groups have different options set. For instance, on the research_centreforinterdisciplinarymethodologies mailing list:
- Staff only have the no dupes option set. Staff can freely send emails to the list and these will be circulated to all subscribers.
- PhD students have the mod option set. Emails from PhD students will be received by the server. James will then receive an email so he can log in an approve or reject the email.
To set the option click on the checkbox and the 'Submit Your Changes'. The page should update and you will see the option now set.
You can also remove an email from the list by clicking on the 'unsub' checkbox and clicking on 'Submit Your Changes'.
Mass subscription
The easiest way to add email addresses is through mass subscription, under Membership Management. To add someone to the list
- Make sure Subscribe, No and No are selected
- Enter the email address one per line into the top box
- Click on the 'Submit Changes' button
The page will refresh and you will see a confirmation message at the top of the page. The email is now added to the list (in the screenshots the email address is test@test.com).
Next, you will need to set the option for the newly added email address(es), as detailed in membership management.
