Insights on Student Interdisciplinary Experience Across Warwick

Summary

Interdisciplinarity is...

“Not only bringing together different ways of seeing the world and different experiences and knowledges from different fields which may or may not be related, but valuing the output from that and seeing it as meaningful and how it can contribute to whatever work that that you're doing”

Having studied a Liberal Arts degree, taken various modules within IATL, such as Forms of Identity, and participated in the Masters in Community, Engagement and Belonging at Warwick, Lils has a broad range of experience engaging with interdisciplinary learning at Warwick. Lils discusses ways that he has brought interdisciplinarity thinking into the creation of a module on tabletop games as part of one of the final assignments for the MASc. Further, Lils notes key ways that interdisciplinarity fosters student-led learning and creativity, and highlights the crucial role that staff and his departments have played in supporting him to pursue interdisciplinary opportunities. Finally, Lils brings to the forefront that student-led learning and discussion is at the heart of any interdisciplinary learning experience.

Students Say...

“I had a routine there unlike any I had ever experienced. The two things I will carry with me forever are how the mundane became magical or inspiring - an act of noticing.”

“I think it's pushed me to think in different ways. I was interested in place/space writing before the summer school, but this has pushed me to think in an entirely different way. I have a newfound desire to write about place, but not only that, it's a newfound desire to get lost in cities I don't know and find out what makes them tick. I feel more open to write about the culture and politics of disappearance.”

Highlights

“Breaking out of the confines of a traditional style of or approach to learning and knowledge.....it tends to welcome like more creative outputs and responses to that knowledge as well.”

“I felt empowered to do so because of the support of my lectures and professors”

“It's creating that support, very explicitly, in a classroom space and creating an environment where asking questions is welcomed”

“we're not expecting you to be experts and everything. We're bringing you new ideas. We want to see how you absorb them and react to them, respond to them and create things alongside the other students”
