Co-Creating an Interdisciplinary Module on AI

Summary

Dr Tom Ritchie discusses the development process and thinking behind a new IATL module offered in the autumn term of 2024 called The AI Revolution: Ethics, Society, and Technology. The module, co-convened with Dr Jennie Mills, explores Artificial Intelligence from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, culminating in a final assessment where students need to imagine what an ethical future of AI will look like in their field in ten years’ time. The module is open to all undergraduate students in year two or year three of their studies. Tom reflects how gaining insights from students on the creation of the module, not only from the two co-creation officers, but also from informal discussions with students from different departments and societies, were crucial to designing the module. Tom concludes with thoughts on how to structure a module on a topic with such a rapidly shifting nature such as AI.

Highlights

“We are keen that they will bring their own specific knowledge and understanding from their home department and then link that to the concept of AI.”

Co-creation “has been transformational.”

“Students are given like a grounding in that each week, but those who already have the grounding can help lead those discussions and help their peers create a new knowledge.”
