The Lived Reality of Disability: Challenging the Routinisation of NIPT

Niamh Intsiful

About the Project

My Student Devised Assessment is a mixed media collage exploring the disability paradox through the lens of Non-Invasive Prenatal testing and the lived experience of Down Syndrome. The core centrepiece is depicted by a sharp, central crack dividing the page: the left side captures the cold , emotionless clinical environment through graphite pencil, while the right side celebrates life and childhood through vibrant, warm hues. By drawing on personal narratives of individuals living with Down Syndrome, this artwork directly challenges the systemic routinisation of prenatal testing. Ultimately, this piece demonstrates that the value and human life cannot be quantified by numerical data but must be viewed and understood through the wealth of lived experiences.
