Sport, Philosophy, and Practice

Assessment Methods
  • Practical Presentation (50%) which includes leading a practical activity
  • Critical Review (50%) which includes writing about a sporting event

Students have the opportunity to explore ideas from the module in two ways, firstly by selecting an element of sporting practice that they can present to the class to encourage both participation and reflection; secondly, they write a critical review of a sporting event of their choice. Examples are circulated in class, but successful pieces of work tend to engage with the ideas of the module in practice and seen through a philosophical or theoretical lens. Students can choose to focus on the same sport across both pieces, but the examples used must differ substantially. Previous examples have included demonstrations of free diving and competitive rowing as optimal experience with reference to theories of flow.
