Spectromicrscopy to study the role of iron in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

Trace Metals in Medicine LaboratoryLink opens in a new window

Investigating the role of metals in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare and presently incurable neurodegenerative disorder. My research focuses on understanding the impact of altered iron homeostasis in PSP, in collaboration with esteemed neuropathologist colleagues at the University of Toronto.

One of the most exciting aspects of my project is the opportunity to develop and enhance methods for imaging analysis of metals in tissue samples. I am fortunate to work at the prestigious Diamond Light Source synchrotronLink opens in a new window in Oxfordshire, where I contribute to the advancement of synchrotron research. Through the utilization of x-ray microscopy and spectroscopy, I am able to study delicate samples while preserving their critical properties at sub-cellular resolutions. The correlation of results obtained from these techniques provides valuable insights into the study of iron in PSP. Collaborating with the Spectroscopy and Imaging Groups, I am actively applying these improved methods to further our understanding of this debilitating disorder.

As a member of the AS-CDT and Trace Metals in Medicine Laboratory at the University of Warwick, as well as a part of the I18 Beamline team at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron, and having the opportunity to visit the University of Toronto, I hope to gain expertise across the spectrum of analytical science, technology, and medicine. These diverse research environments and cultures will equip me with a comprehensive skill set and invaluable experiences.
