Abstract

The detection of edges in images is an important and difficult problem in image processing. This paper presents an object-oriented expert system for the selection of algorithms for enhancing edges in monochrome and colour images. The expert system consists of an advisory module and an image processing module. The advisory module conducts an interactive dialogue with the user to gather information about an image, and suggests the most appropriate algorithm. The image processing module enables the user to process the image using the suggested algorithm, and to compare the effects of using different parameter values during stages of the processing.
