Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems mini-courses

Occasional ETDS related mini-course will be advertised here. Unless stated otherwise, the lectures will take place in the Zeeman building

Spring 2022

February — March 2022: Vadim Kaimanovich (University of Ottawa) will give a mini-course on Random products: growth, entropy, dimension

Abstract: I will survey the ideas and results related to the relationship between various numerical characteristics of random walks on discrete groups (more generally, products of random transformations) and of the resulting limit distributions.

Lecture 1: 5:00pm — 7:00pm, Monday 21 February, Room MS.04

Lecture 2: 3:00pm — 5:00pm, Wednesday 23 February, Room MS.04

Lecture 3: 9:00am — 11:00am, Monday 28 February, Room MS.04

Lecture 4: 5:00pm — 7:00pm, Monday 7 March Room MS.04

Lecture 5: 3:00pm — 4:00pm, Wednseday 9 March, Room MS.04

March — April 2022: Khadim War (IMPA) will give a mini-course on Bowen-Margulis measures.

Abstract: In these lectures we will describe the basic theory of closed surfaces with no conjugate points. We will outline the proof of the uniqueness and other properties of the measure of the measure of maximal entropy (Bowen-Margulis measure). We will then use the Bowen-Margulis measure to give asymptotic estimates on the number of closed geodesics.

Lecture 1: 5:00pm — 7pm, Monday 14 March, Room MS.04

Lecture 2: 2:00pm — 4pm, Tuesday 22 March, Room B3.02

Lecture 3: 2:00pm — 4pm, Tuesday 24 March, Room MS.04

Lecture 4: 2:00pm — 4pm, Tuesday 5 April, Room B3.03

Lecture 5: 2:00pm — 4pm, Tuesday 12 April, Room B3.03
