Surgery, Pain and Rehabilitation Group
We are a research group in Warwick Clinical Trials Unit with a passion for clinical trials of complex healthcare interventions.
We have particular expertise in trials of surgery, musculoskeletal conditions (such as arthritis, tendon disease or back pain), injuries, chronic pain, physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Our research is designed to directly improve patient care. The patient voice is at the core of what we do. We work with patients, clinicians and organisations across the full spectrum of care, from community care facilities all the way through to specialist hospital treatment.

Surgery, Pain and Rehabilitation Impact
Our research is designed to make a positive difference to patient’s lives. To achieve this, we work hard to ensure our research has impact. We have published our work in the world’s leading medical journals (NEJM, Lancet, BMJ) and work with patients and carers to deliver information for the public.
Our researchers have worked with patient organisations, commissioning groups, professional organisations and NICE. Examples include:
- Associate Professor Sandhu was voted ‘Hero of Hope’ by the International pain foundation, for her work in chronic pain.
- We have strong links with numerous professional organisations, including the Association of Trauma and Orthopaedic Chartered Physiotherapists and the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the British Orthopaedic Association.
- Professor Underwood has chaired previous NICE guidelines, and helped lead the recent ‘Back pain’ series of articles in the Lancet
- Our orthopaedic research has been shown to change the delivery of surgery in the UK, reducing complications and saving money.
