Hi David It seems the early stages of the project are reviewing some old ground, old for some of us anyway, but this presentation may be of interest to staff with less of a background in this area. You might be interested in the follow-up blog at http://tallblog.conted.ox.ac.uk/index.php/2011/12/16/visitors-and-residents-an-update/ Take home messages for me; 1) we need to keep holding this question up for debate 2) we should continue to request self-assessments to identify where the skills and confidence gaps are for both staff and students. But then I often find myself on front-line fielding all manner of questions from staff and students. Hence my keen interest in developing an evidence-base – we should be acknowledging the low levels of skills and confidence amongst staff and students so that*we do more* to address the issues and move forwards. Have you seen this? http://bjfogg.com/fbm_files/page4_1.pdf We perhaps need to be: 1. Increasing motivation. My current thinking to achieve this is to bring closer together the tools that facilitate research collaboration with those that facilitate teaching & learning collaboration. Why should a VRE be any (much) different from a VLE. Motivation to use a VRE could be easier to generate when the tools are simple enough to use. 2. Increasing ability *and* increasing simplicity of tools/actions to meet ability half way 3. Improving the triggers – I suspect this is the least well defined aspect in our context.

Perhaps I should not be surprised that much of the language used by Fogg is lifted from sports psychology with which, as a sports coach and ex chef d’equipe, I’m very familiar! 1. We discussed this in our small group on departmental meeting day, not sure it got captured. My current thinking here is that we should be seeking to use common simple tools across all areas of activity – Research, Teaching, Work-based training collaborations. I find it short sighted to be encouraging folk to learn how to use stuff that will never prove useful outside the boundaries of a module/course – motivation will continue to be an issue if broader benefits fail to be demonstrated. 2. Yes! This is the aspect I focus much of my energy on. Could do with more support on this ;-) 3. Ah yes… and sadly so many triggers are framed with negative context :( How many times do we hear “just in time delivery would work best” where the* what is* of “just in time” remains undefined… By the way, this week I’ve helped an Academic thrown by the difference between using SiteBuilder to support their MBChB & Masters modules. What are the differences? Perhaps this is small area WMS could focus on for starters? Cheers Cath

Like. Oh, sorry, that doesn’t work here ;)

  7. Re: What Motivates Engagement with the Digital Information Environment?
This is interesting David, though perhaps not as ‘new’ as the authors suggest. What if I am: * Motivated to do X * Have the ability to use the tools which would allow this * mmm what are the triggers? * What I’m interested in? * What can be shown to supplement the student experience? * What will get more ‘ticks’ for me, the department, the school, the university? * What there is time to set-up and sustain in a given context? * Having a strategy and knowing that this is what the team is collectively working towards? * ... ... I agree triggers are key – without a purpose it’s easy to drift aimlessly!

Hi Cath, You’d like more support: * where do you see that coming from? * what sort of support do you mean?

  9. Re: What Motivates Engagement with the Digital Information Environment?
Claire, I don’t think those are the kinds of triggers that Fogg is thinking about. In fact those are actually more like motivators, or aspects of motivation. Fogg’s is a behaviour model, so the triggers are behavioural. For example, and email from RSS or HR, ‘Please update your ERA profile because it’s important’. That’s a trigger. Now I’ll only do it if a) I know how to update my ERA profile and b) I could be bothered. I think where Fogg is coming from is, in order to get people to do things that you want them to do, all 3 variables need to be in conjunction. So the lesson for the institution in this example is to a) make sure everyone who needs an ERA profile is trained – and as important, make sure the ERA web site is easy to use. That creates the ability and is independent of the trigger. Incidentally Fogg’s team at Stanford do a lot of work on simplifying IT systems – that’s their main focus in the Persuasion Lab. b) make sure everyone knows why it’s important to have an ERA profile, or any kind of academic/research profile. That’s not the same as saying please update your ERA profile because it’s important. That’s more of a values/culture thing, and can be developed independent of the trigger – also essential I think so that motivation for this is there without it having to be specifically developed at a point in time. Analogy – if you have within you the spirit of charitable giving, then you don’t need to be convinced to give when the time comes. Then, when it’s that time of year to remind people to update their ERA profiles, your trigger has a better chance of arriving at the right time and will be effective. At least that’s how I read Fogg. David.

Hi Claire Don’t think I’ve responded to this yet, sorry! With this theme in mind I put together some of my thoughts on engaging stakeholders last summer – see http://go.warwick.ac.uk/wmsedtstaff/map/roles/projectoffice/projects/stakeholders/ Guess I like to work collaboratively with colleagues as I feel the outputs of collaborative work are more likely to become embedded, achieve more in terms of staff development and are therefore more sustainable. Cheers Cath
