Habitability and Inhabitance

A new paper published today provides a new viewpoint on the habitability of planets, and its codependence on inhabitance of those same planets. The presence of life influences the habitability of a planet, through its effect on the composition of the planet's atmosphere.

CEH seminar series

The CEH is pleased to announce the launch of a new, monthly seminar series: "Visions of Habitability".

The seminar series will feature short research papers, primarily from members of the CEH (with occasional invited speakers), and will feature a significant period of time dedicated to discussion. All are welcome.

The first seminar will take place on the 8th of March, and will feature a paper by Chloe Pugh.

IATL funding success

A proposal to the Insitute of Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) by a team from the CEH led by Drs. David Armstrong and Jonathan Heron has been successful in its application. The funding will be used to fund two or three events; discussion of their format is ongoing.


Longevity of habitable conditions

An intriguing paper published on the ArXiv preprint server today discusses the length of time for which planets are habitable, and the implications for SETI experiments.

Life in unusual cosmic locations?

A paper published on the astronomy preprint server last week investigates whether life could develop and survive in globular clusters. These stellar environments are often ignored as potential cradles of civilisation, but this study shows that they could have more potential than previously thought.
