My primary research interest is in computational plasma physics involving both the development of new codes and their use in problems in solar, space and laboratory plasma physics. The codes on which I have been the scientific lead are:
- EPOCH - a relativistic particle-in-cell code which includes binary collisions, radiation, QED effects and ionisation. This code has a wide range of uses in all of plasma physics but is principally used within the Warwick CFSA group to study kinetic process in laser-plasma interactions. Most recently this has focuses on laser scattering instabilities (SRS) relevant for shock-ignition schemes for fusion energy.
- Lare3d - a 3D MHD solver using the Lagrangian-remap scheme which extends ideal MHD to include resistivity, thermal conductivity and radiation effects. This code has been used to study the propagation of MHD waves in the Solar atmosphere, especially the chromosphere, and their role in heating and launching spicules.
- Odin - an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) radiation-hydrodynamics code designed to study laser driven fusion experiments.
- Valis - a 2D relativistic Vlasov solver used for high-fidelity EM wave plasma interaction studies.
