Module 9: Solid - State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Aims and objectives

To provide students with a comprehensive overview of ‘hot topics’ in current NMR research. The main objective of this module is to introduce students to current research on MR based techniques and a wide range of applications. This module introduces a number of current key research areas and will involve the students through student presentations and student-led discussions. Students will be encouraged to relate their own research projects to the wide context of currently ongoing research in NMR.

Syllabus

Three face to face lectures (4.5 hours) will be given at the Advanced Training Workshop. This module builds on the MR theory I module (M3) and draws on topics covered in MR theory II (M10). The syllabus covers

  • Anisotropic interactions and Magic-Angle Spinning (MAS)
  • Cross polarisation and recoupling under MAS
  • Applications to materials
  • Applications to biomolecules

Successful completion of the module contributes 6 credits (60 hours student effort)
