Module 6: Enterprise & Entrepreneurship


Aims and objectives

The UK has a worldwide reputation for the excellence of its science research. However, the ability to identify and exploit this is not something traditionally taught on science-based courses. This module will consider how commercialisation opportunities can be identified and what needs to be done to successfully bring research ideas, inventions and innovation into the public domain. The module will enable you to build a portfolio of completed assignments demonstrating proficiency Enterprise & Entrepreneurship.

Syllabus

This module is designed to give you the understanding of how you can turn your great research ideas into a commercial product and may even lead to totally new ideas. Specific topics include:

The drivers for commercialisation, intellectual property, the commercialisation process including "technology readiness levels" and developing a commercial opportunity.

Assessment

Completion of assignments agreed with Course Director and/or Research Supervisor. These may include written assessment of commercialisation opportunities in your own field of research, a review of relevant patents, completion of a relevant training course, a technology development plan etc.

Credit

Contributes to credits associated with completion of local and partner Transferable Skills Modules
