Research Area and Supervisor

Research Area

All students applying should consult the research pages to confirm that their research proposal is in an area of current departmental research. Broadly, research in the department fits into one of our three main research groups:

We normally expect students who wish to enter the PhD programme to have had some contact with original research in Psychology before they apply. Usually this takes the form of work for their first degree in Psychology or for a Masters degree. It means that students have had a chance to read research reports published in up-to-date research journals, and to understand the conceptual background to particular empirical studies, the aims, methodology, findings and implications. However, we will also consider students with a different kind of background (e.g., computer science, linguistics, education, biology) where their training and experience is particularly relevant to the area of research that they wish to tackle AND the area of research is one where we can provide expert supervision, i.e., a member of staff has an active research interest in that area.

Supervisor

Prospective applicants should consult the staff list to determine current staff research interests, and are strongly encouraged to contact individual members of staff to discuss possible research projects prior to submission of a formal application to prevent dissapointment.
