This webinar explores how Participatory Research (PR) can enhance Autism Research by involving autistic people and those with lived experience of autism. It also introduces practical tools, including the new ELPART framework, designed to help researchers and organisations build diverse, inclusive Expert by Experience groups and embed participatory approaches in their work.

  • This webinar offers resources, reflections, and strategies for researchers, practitioners, and community leads committed to building more collaborative research with diverse communities.
  • Led by the University of Warwick, Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, and Experts by Experience (EbEs), you will hear from academics, practitioners and community members working together to co-produce inclusive methods and practice in autism research.
  • Please note that you are welcome to join the full programme or attend just one of the sessions (see below).
  • For any questions, please contact the organiser, Dr Gitit Kadar-Satat at Gitit.kadar-Satat@warwick.ac.uk

Programme

Session 1 - Inclusive Participatory Research in Autism Research: a collaboration between academia, the NHS, and community members

In this session, we will share how the University of Warwick, NHS partners and community members have worked together to gain a better understanding of how Participatory Research can be applied in Autism Research, with a focus on including community members who are typically underrepresented in this field. The session will outline the project’s aims, academic and NHS perspectives, and the role of Experts by Experience. Speakers will reflect on their involvement, share early findings, and discuss next steps for this collaborative approach to addressing gaps in Autism Research and improving real-world outcomes.

Presenters: Dr Jagjeet (Jag) Jutley-Neilson, Gemma Cartwright, Dr Gurnam Singh, Emily Ahmed, John Bernard, Rohan Dasgupta, Misrah Mohamed.

Session 2 - Introducing an evaluation framework to support researchers in participatory research with the autistic community

Participatory research is increasingly recognised as best practice in autism research, offering a more inclusive, ethical, and impactful approach. Yet, many researchers, both early career and experienced, struggle to implement participatory methods in genuinely meaningful and equitable ways. In this session, a team of neurodivergent researchers introduce two practical tools designed to support researchers in embedding participation throughout the entire research process. The ELPART Framework helps evaluate and enhance meaningful involvement of autistic people at every stage of a study, while the PAR Group Checklist promotes inclusive and accessible interactions and redresses power imbalances. Both tools have been co-produced with autistic collaborators and are grounded in lived experience and critical reflection. Together, these resources aim to increase transparency, foster learning, and help researchers navigate the complex dynamics of participatory work. Whether you are new to participatory research or looking to deepen your practice, this session offers practical guidance and community-driven insights to support more equitable and impactful autism research.

Presenters: Ellie Horton, Daniel Tones, Dr. Anita Z. Goldschmied and Laura Brownhill.
