- An interactive workshop session to consider how to translate the recommendations into action.

- A discussion panel where representatives from academic associations and higher education institutions respond to the issues that arise from the earlier sessions.

About 'In Two Places at Once':
  • The project has produced important insights into the challenges that academics with caring responsibilities face when attending conferences, both from their home institutions and from conference participation itself.
  • While conferences may seem to form a relatively minor part of an academic's work, they are well known to be vital sites for career progression, networking and intellectual engagement. As such, issues of access and participation should form part of the wider equality agenda in higher education.
  • This study fills a gap in knowledge in how caring responsibilities impact on academics' ability to both attend conferences and fully participate in conferences when they are there.
  • The study provides evidence of the challenges and has also produced practical recommendations for higher education institutions and conference organisers.
